Race to Keep Hearts Beating Foundation hosts Second Annual Benefit Dinner and Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament
Race Salazar’s story has something in common with many others. At nineteen, he was the victim of sudden arrhythmia death syndrome (SADS), a genetic heart rhythm abnormality that can cause sudden death in young, apparently healthy people – who are undiagnosed. SADS is passed down from parent to child with each child of an affected parent having a 50% chance of inheriting the condition. It is estimated that over half of the 4,000 SADS deaths each year of children, teens, or young adults had one of the top warning signs: 1) family history, even if it was not known, or 2) fainting or seizure during exercise, excitement or startle; 3)consistent or unusual chest pain and/or shortness of breath during exercise. On January 7th, Karie Salazar, Race’s mother, with the help of various volunteers, coordinated the 2nd annual effort to raise money and awareness for SADS in Folsom. To celebrate Race’s interest and involvement in sports and poker playing, Race’s memory was honored by family, friends, and community members who came out to the Folsom Athletic Club to generously support the SADS cause. Laura Wall, Vice President of Development and Marketing from the SADS headquarters in Utah came to the annual benefit to speak about SADS and give support to the Salazar family, who are determined to help others become aware of the syndrome and learn how future deaths may be prevented. Karie would like to thank Race’s father, Erick Salazar, Race’s grandparents, Marilyn and Bruce Rakow, “The Boys” from Folsom, students from UNLV and others who greatly contributed as key volunteers for the event.
