Jonathan R. Cowley

Family and friends have established this memorial fund in Jonathan's honor. The funds raised here will support the families and save the lives of children and young people with heart rhythm abnormalities and help raise awareness of SADS conditions around the world.
Jonathan was born on May 10,1990. From the time he could walk, Jon was involved in athletics. He began playing organized soccer and ice hockey when he was six years old and continued up until his death. Jon was a graduate of Benedictine High School in Richmond VA where he was a co-captain of the varsity soccer team and named to the VISAA All State and All Metro Richmond Teams. Jon also lettered in Lacrosse and Golf and served as Treasurer of the Key Club. Jon had just completed his freshman year at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He achieved Deans List academic standing while playing on the VCU Ice Hockey Team.
Jons love of sports, however, never hindered his academic success. He was working toward graduating college in three years instead of four. He had goals and always had a plan for how to achieve them. He knew where he wanted to be three, five and ten years from now. In life, Jonathan touched so many people in such a positive way. Jon was a remarkable young man who never hesitated to defend someone in need, even if it meant standing up against his own friends in defense of someone. He had no fear of how others judged him as long as he thought he was doing the right thing. Although he was our youngest child, he was the family member that each of us turned to when love, support or reassurance was needed. We were never disappointed. Jon had a positive effect not just on us but on everyone he met because he always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. His joyfulness and love of life was contagious.
On May 13, 2010 Jonathan return home from school for the summer, after finishing his first year of college. On May 14, 2010 Jon went to bed like every other night thinking he had tomorrow. Unfortunately Jonathan did not wake up on May 15, 2010, just five days after his 20th birthday. His heart misfired and stopped beating. Commonly referred to as Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS). Jon did not have any symptoms that we were aware of.
Please help us to accomplish this mission. We cannot do it alone.
