Yes, AEDs can be used when someone has an ICD. We just move the pads down a bit if the ICD is where we want to put them. (so that the ICD doesn't block the flow of energy from the AED.) When I teach CPR AED classes, this is something we always cover--and tell folks not to hesitate to use the AED. If the person is unresponsive and not breathing, it usually means the ICD is not working, either due to fractured leads, "dead" battery, or whatever. That's unlikely to happen, of course, but is a great backup. Folks at your school should know that, but it never hurts to remind, so they'll never hesitate to use the AED if you need it though.
