Nikki was a loving mother, fiancé, daughter, sister, and friend loved by anyone who had the privilege to meet her. She was blissfully happy with hopes of planning her wedding and buying her new home. Things changed late one fall evening, she was cooking dinner and suddenly fainted and was rushed to the hospital. Upon assessment lab work and tests, the doctor reassured everything was normal and was sent home. Befoe discharge upon review of her EKG by the cardiologist, a long QT interval was detected. She was sent home with a beta blocker and told to follow up after discharge. In the morning she was found unconscious and after every effort to revive her she was pronounced dead.
January 31, 2019 the worst day of our lives, receiving the news my sister was gone was the hardest thing to endure. She was taken so unexpectedly without warning. What makes this whole ordeal even harder is we encompass a family history of LongQT syndrome, however we were unaware of how deadly and undetected this syndrome is. We were fortunate to diagnose her 2 year old Maddox with Long QT type 2 with the help of genetic testing and he is now being treated and monitored. My promise to her is to bring awareness to the community and more importantly to my family of this silent killer. Her death will not be in vain if we can save the lives of others.
